The Case for Greatness
It is fashionable to dismiss Sir Winston Churchill as a “flawed character” and callous imperialist. This view is historically illiterate. Churchill was a titan of Western Civilisation who spent his life fighting for the welfare of the common man, the liberty of the individual, and the protection of the Commonwealth and her allies.
Charges of cruelty levied by critics are inversions of the truth. They ignore the crushing burden of total war and the sacrifices of the British Empire made to secure freedom. They ignore that he was often the lone voice against tyranny, whether it marched from Moscow or Berlin.
The Strategic Reality
1939-1945The Logistics of Survival
Critics argue that Churchill “chose” to starve Bengal whilst feeding Britain. This ignores the Axis stranglehold on the world’s oceans.
The Impossible Choice
“To divert shipping from the Atlantic was to risk the invasion of England and the collapse of the Soviet Union. To divert it from the Pacific was to allow Japan to overrun India entirely.”
- 1,664Ships Sunk (1942): The Axis sank nearly 8 million tons of Allied shipping in one year. There was no “surplus” fleet to move grain.
- 60%Shipping Cut: The diversion of ships from India was not malice; it was the result of the Battle of the Atlantic, where U-boats were winning.
